 This program is designed for published poets who are at an early or intermediate stage in their career. If you are seeking to develop a book-length manuscript with the guidance of an experienced writer/editor, and wish to divide the writing time between a two-week residency in Banff and twenty weeks in your home work space, this residency is for you. Since there are fewer of you than narrative writers, poets are particularly encouraged to apply. Past participants of the program have become leading writers in Canada. Applications from international writers are also welcome.

ITEM 8: STORIES NEEDED! DEADLINE FOR STORIES JULY 20 

Call from co-author a brand new Canadian title, Chicken Soup for the Soul O Canada The Wonders of Winter.   “We’re looking for stories from people just like you, who might enjoy being published in a Chicken Soup for the Soul book. The story submission deadline is tight – July 20, but we need TRUE stories, 1200 words or less, about how you embraced and made the most of challenging or amusing winter situations. Here are some examples of topics, but we know you can think of many more:

• Hockey
• The support of family during the long cold months
• Friendships created out of the cold days and long nights
• Driving in the winter
• Facing the adversity of winter
• Over coming the obstacles of the weather
• The back-yard skating rink!
• Winter sports: Hockey, curling, ice fishing, skiing, tobogganing, skating etc.
• Best winter foods and events
• Shovelling the driveway; de-icing the car, travelling in the winter.
• Christmas and holiday traditions

Writers whose stories are selected will be paid $200.00, get a bio in the back, and 10 free copies of the book. Because this book will be released in time for Christmas 2013, the deadline for stories is July 20. While the topic is winter in Canada, the stories still need to be Chicken Soup stories, which means there must be an inspiring moment of goose bumps, upliftment or laughter – there must be a gift for the reader.  ITEM 9: THE AESTHETICA CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION 

 I decided to give this one a its own spot as they allow both new and previously-published work to be submitted! This contest offers both existing and aspiring writers the chance to showcase their work to a wider, international audience. Now in its sixth year, the competition celebrates and nurtures creative talent, inviting writers to submit imaginative and original work in either category for entry: Poetry or Short Fiction.

Prizes include £500 prize money, publication in the Aesthetica Creative Writing Annual and a selection of books from partner organisations.   ITEM 10: DEADLINE EXTENDED | CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR CANADA’S NEXT PARLIAMENTARY POET LAUREATE                NEW!

  The Parliament of Canada recently issued a call for nominations to begin the search for Canada’s sixth Parliamentary Poet Laureate. There is still time to nominate candidates: the deadline has been extended to August 30, 2013.

The role of the Parliamentary Poet Laureate is to promote the importance and value of poetry among all Canadians. Pursuant to the Parliament of Canada Act, the Poet Laureate may perform the following duties: compose poetry, including for use in Parliament on occasions of state, sponsor poetry readings, advise the Parliamentary Librarian on the Library’s collection and acquisitions to enrich the collection’s cultural holdings, and perform related duties at the request of the Speaker of the Senate or the Speaker of the House of Commons, or the Parliamentary Librarian. The Poet Laureate holds office for a maximum of two years.

 ITEM 12: OTTAWA PUBLIC LIBRARY HOSTS `LEARN TO CAMP´ PROGRAMS IN JULY                                                               NEW!

 Ontario Parks staff will offer `Learn to Camp´ sessions at the Ottawa Public Library in July, geared towards newcomers, people who have never camped before and young families.

These hands-on workshops will cover equipment, camp set-up, safety and ethics to help people overcome barriers to camping and consider spending time in the outdoors to foster a sense of connection to the environment.

ITEM 13 : ALGONQUIN COLLEGE SCREENWRITING WORKSHOPS  

DATE: Monday Aug. 12 to Friday Aug. 16 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., TO Noon on Friday.

 

Algonquin College is hosting four screenwriting workshops from Monday, August 12 to Friday, August 16th, offering a unique opportunity for aspiring screenwriters to hone their talents and prepare for a career in the Canadian media industry.

The four workshops are: Introduction to Screenwriting; Advanced screenwriting; Writing for Television; and Writing for Digital Media.  All are taught by seasoned screen professionals who will guide participants’ projects and stories.

Classes from from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from Monday to Thursday, and until noon on Friday.  Participants will have an opportunity on Friday to pitch their projects to producers from the Ottawa area.

• NEW DEADLINE! LIT POP Award: Due to overwhelming demand, we are extending the Lit POP deadline until July 10th. About Lit POP: The POP Montreal International Music Festival and Matrix Magazine are pleased to bring you North America’s most innovative and exciting literary competition. We are looking for writing that really pops (poetry and short fiction).
