ITEM 4: ALGONQUIN COLLEGE SCREENWRITING WORKSHOPS
DATE: Monday Aug. 12 to Friday Aug. 16 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., TO Noon on Friday.
Algonquin College is hosting four screenwriting workshops from Monday, August 12 to Friday, August 16th, offering a unique opportunity for aspiring screenwriters to hone their talents and prepare for a career in the Canadian media industry.
The four workshops are: Introduction to Screenwriting; Advanced screenwriting; Writing for Television; and Writing for Digital Media. All are taught by seasoned screen professionals who will guide participants’ projects and stories.

ITEM 5: EAST COAST PUBLISHER FIERCE INK PRESS OPENS SUBMISSIONS TO REST OF CANADA AUG. 6 TO AUG. 20 2013
For the first time since launching in 2012 Fierce Ink Press Co-op Ltd. is now open to submissions from all Canadian young adult authors. While the company’s focus is on publishing quality young adult books of fiction and short non-fiction pieces by Atlantic Canadians, authors in other regions of Canada can now submit between August 6 (12:01 a.m. ADT) and August 20 (11:59 p.m. ADT).
“Since we opened our doors in June of 2012, we’ve received many emails from around the world inquiring about opening submissions to the international market,” says Kimberly Walsh, publishing label executive with Fierce Ink Press. “While we remain committed to producing diverse works from talented East Coast Canadian writers, we understand and appreciate the fact that there are authors from across this country who are eager to work with us.”

ITEM 7: THE AESTHETICA CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION
I decided to give this one a its own spot as they allow both new and previously-published work to be submitted! This contest offers both existing and aspiring writers the chance to showcase their work to a wider, international audience. Now in its sixth year, the competition celebrates and nurtures creative talent, inviting writers to submit imaginative and original work in either category for entry: Poetry or Short Fiction. Prizes include £500 prize money, publication in the Aesthetica Creative Writing Annual and a selection of books from partner organisations. ITEM 8: DEADLINE EXTENDED | CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR CANADA’S NEXT PARLIAMENTARY POET LAUREATE
The Parliament of Canada recently issued a call for nominations to begin the search for Canada’s sixth Parliamentary Poet Laureate. There is still time to nominate candidates: the deadline has been extended to August 30, 2013.

The role of the Parliamentary Poet Laureate is to promote the importance and value of poetry among all Canadians. Pursuant to the Parliament of Canada Act, the Poet Laureate may perform the following duties: compose poetry, including for use in Parliament on occasions of state, sponsor poetry readings, advise the Parliamentary Librarian on the Library’s collection and acquisitions to enrich the collection’s cultural holdings, and perform related duties at the request of the Speaker of the Senate or the Speaker of the House of Commons, or the Parliamentary Librarian. The Poet Laureate holds office for a maximum of two years.
