ITEM 4: NORTHWORDS MUSKOKA WRITING RETREAT

ITEM 8: FROM PWAC BULLETIN: A PROJECT TO MEASURE THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF  JOURNALISM                 

Thomas Rose of Wilfid Laurier University, journalism educator and former journalist is seeking participants for a new study into journalism independence in Canadian newsrooms.

If you are a traditional or non-traditional journalist or are working
in any phase of the journalistic process, and if you have experienced or know of anyone who has experienced any interference with the content of the journalism produced, I would like to hear from you.  This project will assess the state of journalistic independence according to the basic provisions of the firewall principle.  Under this principle, a key measure of
journalistic independence and integrity is freedom from interference by
business, political, or other interests.  A breach in the firewall might for example, cause a journalist to alter details of a story, to ignore a developing story, or even to kill a story  altogether.  Strict confidentiality guaranteed.

Amanda Earl + Dawn Kresan

Amanda Earl is anOttawa poet and blogger and managing editor of Bywords.ca. Amanda is the author of numerous poetry chapbooks published in Canada, the USA and the UK, most recently “Sex First & Then A Sandwich” (above/ground press, 2012). Two manuscripts, “Sessions from the Dream House Aria” and “Eve, a mere roar,” a collaborative work with Sandra Ridley, have been shortlisted for the Robert Kroetsch Innovative Poetry Award. The managing editor of Bywords.ca, Amanda holds an Honours BA and an MA in French Language, Literature and Translation from the University of Waterloo, and Honours BA in Translation from the School of Translators and Interpreters at the University of Ottawa.

 Dawn Kresan’s poetry has appeared in a number of literary journals, including The Dalhousie Review, Carousel, Vallum, Lichen, The Windsor Review, Prairie Journal, CV2, The Antigonish Review and Event. Her first full-length poetry collection will be published by Tightrope in 2013. She lives in Kingsville, Ontario, with her husband
and their daughter.

NATIONAL ABORIGINAL HISTORY MONTH

 

The Ottawa Public Library is hosting a series of five programs at multiple branches in June to celebrate National Aboriginal History Month.  Programs are free to attend.

Governor General Literary award-winning Ojibway author and artist, Leo Yerxa, will discuss his art and books at the Rockcliffe Park and Rosemount branches.

Chad Solomon will present the `Council of the Animals´ puppet show about friendship and unconditional love at the Carlingwood, Orléans and Vanier branches.

Ottawa Inuit Children´s Centre will present Inuit storytelling, culture and music at the Alta Vista and North Gloucester branches.

Aboriginal Experiences will explore their connection to the “heartbeat of Mother Earth”: the drum, at the Greenboro, Greely, Main, Rideau and Stittsville branches.

·Pinock, an Algonquin from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Nation, will explain the importance of the birch canoe and demonstrate how they´re built at the Vanier branch.

 ITEM 15: THE WRITERS’ UNION OF CANADA VOTES TO ADMIT SELF-PUBLISHED   AUTHORS                                                                       NEW!

 

 In a unanimous vote, members of The Writers’ Union of Canadaattending their 40th Anniversary annual general meeting June 1st approved a resolution opening membership in the Union to professional, self-published authors.

The resolution will be presented to the entire TWUC membership (over 2000 Canadian book authors) in a referendum and will come into force with a two-thirds majority. “This is a landmark decision,” said a delighted Merilyn Simonds, Chair of TWUC, “one that addresses our sincere desire for inclusion and innovation, while maintaining our tradition of defining and upholding professional standards for writers in Canada.”
