Small Stone for Jan. 3, 2014

badge-14-300x300Today Rilke’s poem is titled Entering, which speaks of leaving a known place and creating a world, yet not trying to fabricate meaning.

This would be something very difficult for me, as my inner editor wakes up in the morning even before I do. I think the only time she’s quiet happens when I am asleep, although perhaps she reigns there too, editing dreams.

What is it,
to enter this unknown
world where nothing
has been interpreted

and where I choose still
to interpret nothing,
to let everything
be what it is

and not what I
want it to be,
to learn how
to let go?

Small Stone for Jan. 2, 2014

badge-14-300x300Today’s passage from A Year with Rilke speaks about feelings being set free. How light ones move upward, while heavy ones bow, sway. The last line resonated in its message of the world around us being enough. Moments before, in my back garden, a light breeze makes itself known:

Morning comes
at the tickle end
of a cat’s whisker.

In my garden,  Christmas lanterns 2009031
ghost breath
tickles wind chimes,
bird feeder, a lantern.

Everything dances.

So, today is Jan. 1 2014. This past fall, I picked up a copy of A Year with Rilke, a daily reader from the writings of Rainer Maria Rilke, translation by Joanna Macy & Anita Barrows.

Rainer Maria Rilke

Since, like many of my writer friends, my pile of books still unread is threatening to topple over, I set this one aside to begin on January 1st. The first entry is about beginnings. And today, I begin the Mindful Writing Challenge for 2014. http://www.writingourwayhome.com/small-stones/mindful-writing-challenge-jan-14/#whereshare

The year begins
on a bright note of sky.

Who can regret the chill air
when there is such a blue?
