Ottawa’s Field Stone Poets, Sylvia Adams, Margaret M. Zielinski, Glenn Kletke, Carol Stephen and Gill Foss, will be reading from Whistle for Jellyfish, their collection of travel poems (BookLand Press) and personal selections of their individual 
work both published and new. If you enjoy a wide range of poetic styles this will be a great way to enjoy a change of pace in the middle of your day. A limited number of books will be available for sale. Everyone welcome.

ITEM 3: CAA MEMBER CHRISTIANE D’AOUST BOOK SIGNING
DATE: Saturday, May 25 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
LOCATION: CHAPTERS, KANATA CENTRUM, 400 EARL GREY DRIVE.
Gem-Bem and the Mystery of the Ball of Branches, a novella length story for children from 8 to 12 years of age, is also available in French. Gem-Bem, a friendly cat, ventures into the deep forest with her best friend in search of a big stretch of water. Along the way, they discover a mysterious ball of branches. Of course, Gem-Bem wants to solve this mystery. During their trek, Gem-Bem and her forest friends share a wonderful adventure and learn the true value of friendship. One question remains, will the mystery be solved?
The readers will find themselves in the company of Gem-Bem and her friends in the heart of the forest. Throughout the adventure, the author uses action and dialogue between the animals to teach unique characteristics of the animals and valuable life lessons. A glossary, amazing color and black & white illustrations, and a map add to the entertaining story.

ITEM 4: BRANDON WINT’S POETRY READING & WRITING CLUB NEW!

Brandon Wint’s Poetry Readers and Writer’s Club is a fresh hybrid of poetry-oriented courses Brandon has designed or co-designed and facilitated over the last several years. This set of classes, which will happen on Wednesday evenings inside the University Centre of Ottawa U, is the first of its kind and has unique community-building potential for those whose love of poetry is deep, flourishing, and wide-ranging. These gatherings will be a dynamic mixture of a book-club and a writing group.

2 crazy sacrificial poems to be decided
Britta “Britta B.” Badour, resides in Toronto, serving the community as a youth mentor and advocate for socially conscious living. She has toured with her poetry across North America, empowering thousands of people to recognize that the “power of your voice can change the world.” In 2010, she spent the summer facilitating a youth leadership trip in Kenya, where she found herself lost for words for the first time. Britta began her career as a spoken word artist in 2011, with a solo trip to New York City. Since then, she has fascinated audiences with feature performances, opened for HBO Def Poetry superstars Carlos Andrés Gómez and Shihan, and earned a spot on the 2012 Toronto Poetry Slam team. Last summer, she unveiled her first chapbook Oh, Britta and competed at the National Poetry Slam in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Most recently, Britta competed as a finalist at the 2012 Canadian Festival of Spoken Word (achieving 3rd place), she has released a second book of poetry called Speak, and was a featured guest in Dwayne Morgan’s 2013 production of When Sisters Speak. Britta also competed as a Toronto representative at the Women of the World Poetry Slam in Minneapolis, earlier this year. As a self-proclaimed thrill-seeker, she enjoys rainy bike rides, cooking in the dark and quiet conversations with the moon.

The Capital Poetry Collective, in conjunction with Red Words, is proud to bring you the Capital Poetry Collective’s first ever STORY SLAM!
Ruthanne Edward hosted Once Upon A Slam on behalf of Red Words for two years, at the home of slam in Ottawa – The Mercury Lounge! She has become the ‘go-to’ name to bring Story Slams to the Canadian Storytelling Community – and now she is bringing it to the Capital Poetry Collective!
So, what is a Story Slam? Think of a Poetry Slam, but with stories instead of poems (though they may also be poems… as long as they tell a story!)… the tellers get 5 minutes to wow you and random judges decide their fate… Not so different from what you are used to… yet, oh so, different. For this event, all tellers must tell true, personal stories. It is only one round and everybody has a story to tell… so let’s hear it! Stories are meant to be told, not recited, so no paper is allowed. Remember… it is the story, not the individual words that are important!
And that is not all! We will have a very special Once Upon A Slam feature: Marta Singh! Marta has amazed audiences with her story of growing up in Argentina’s Dirty War. This story is not to be missed… it is emotional, captivating and vivid. This will be a night that is talked about. Don’t miss it.

Tuesday May 24, 2016 Tree Reading Series, Black Squirrel Books, 1073 Bank Street, Ottawa, 6:45 p.m. Workshop, Breaking the Sentence: From Experimental Lyric to Cognitive Poetics, Jennifer Baker will take us through an exploration of the lyric’s potential for engaging with, but reaching beyond its testimonial confessional aspects, breaking with the syntax of the sentence and putting language and its embodiment first. Exploring a brief selection of poems by Phil Hall and Sina Queyras, and finishing with a short writing exercise, we will explore the liberating potential in the experimental lyric’s ability to reach underneath narrative to communicate the unsayable. Qais Ghanem to read from and discuss his recent books. Qais’s writing is diverse, ranging from novels (Final Flight From Sanaa, Two Boys form Aden College), and non-fiction (My Arab Spring, My Canada), to his recently released book of English and Arabic poetry (From Left to Right). He is an invited regular political columnist for Gulf News in Dubai, and blogs for Huffington Post. With diverse experiences as a radio host, community activist, retired professor of medicine, Ghanem’s writing touches on the important social, cultural and political questions of the day.
