In many ways there are far more opportunities today for authors to get exposure and coverage for their book then there ever were. That being said, there is also a huge amount of competition for readers’ eyeballs. So what is an author to do?

Having worked in broadcasting (both radio and television) for over 25 years, and witnessed the explosion in social media in the last ten years, Sheryl can tell you that sometimes the simplest and most straightforward of methods work best. And more often than not, it is the ‘put-yourself-out-there’ author who gets the reviews, gets the interviews and gets people talking about their book.

But where does one start? How do you find out whom to approach? When should you start talking about your book? Sheryl hopes to help you get started on the journey and provide useful advice so you can create your own marketing plan, discover the best way to write a release and understand the best way to approach radio/television.

BIO: Sheryl Bennett-Wilson worked in broadcasting in Ottawa – both radio and television – for over 25 years. For the last number of years she has written numerous articles for local and national publications, provided press and marketing material for companies, professionals, authors, musicians and a number of charities. She has also written, directed and produced corporate videos, provided editing for non-fiction books, written and continues to write content for websites and for over twelve years was the Event Manager of an annual trade show.

CAA-NCR MEMBER, J.C. SULZENKO, AS CURATOR OF POETRY QUARTER FOR THE GLEBE REPORT HAS ANNOUNCED AN OPEN CALL FOR POETRY

DEADLINE: Monday, April 11

The third edition of “Poetry Quarter,” a compilation of poems, curated by JC Sulzenko and published quarterly in the Glebe Report community newspaper, will appear in the May 2016 issue. The Glebe Report is now seeking submissions of poems for possible selection for this issue. The poem or poet must have a connection to the Glebe or close neighbouring community (i.e. the poem must be about the Glebe or the poet must live, work, study or volunteer in the Glebe (or close neighbouring community)). Poets of all ages are welcome to submit.

Poems should be:

Original and unpublished in any medium
On any subject within the bounds of public discourse
No more than 30 lines each

Please submit your entries (up to 7 poems) by April 11 to editor@glebereport.ca. Please be sure to include your Glebe connection, your contact information, and your grade, if you are in school.

The CAA Emerging Writer Award is for a body of work by a Canadian author under 30 deemed to show exceptional promise. Nominees need not be published. The postmark deadline for this award is April 30, 2016.

The Canadian Authors Fred Kerner Book Award is a brand new award given exclusively to members. Any genre is eligible. The postmark deadline for this award is April 15, 2016.

A Muslim woman engaging in religious and political imagery in lyric and narrative styles, Rahat Kurd steps out our of her cultural comfort zone to provide a unique book of poetry that combines reflections on Kashmir, Muslim culture, and religious imagery, with an often alienating yet also stimulating city life. Rahat Kurd is a prose writer whose essays have appeared in The Walrus and Maisonneuve magazines. VERSeFest Hall of Honour Inductees Announced Ottawa, ON – Mar. 18, 2016 – VERSeFest, Ottawa’s International Poetry Festival, is pleased to announce this year’s inductees to the Hall of Honour, rob mclennan and Andrée Lacelle, for outstanding service to the Ottawa-Gatineau poetry community.

mclennan and Lacelle will be inducted into the Hall of Honour 7:00 P.M., Sunday, March 20^th. The ceremony will also include readings by Parliamentary Poet Laureate George Elliott Clarke and Governor General Award winner Robyn Sarah.

For three decades, rob mclennan has been at the forefront of promoting poetry in the city of Ottawa. His literary productivity has been outstanding, with over two dozen trade books of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. He has demonstrated tireless community leadership in his activities as the founder of the Ottawa small press book fair, the organizer of the factory reading series, and the editor and founder of Chaudiere Books, ottawater, the Peter F. Yacht Club, and above/ground press. All of these activities, alongside the generosity of his mentorship and his editorial flair, have helped to shape the creative ethos of this city.

Born in Hawkesbury, Andrée Lacelle has published a dozen books and received numerous literary accolades. She was the first to receive the French-language Trillium Book Award for Tant de vie s’égare (Éditions du Vermillon, 1994 [2007]) and she has also been shortlisted for the Governor General Award. Instrumental to the promotion of French-language literature, she has been a long-time contributor of book reviews. She has also reviewed Franco-Ontarian literature on the show “Panorama” (TFO, 2006-2010) and on her radio program “Au cœur des mots” (2011-2014). Her literary collaborations recently included co-writing and co-editing pas d’ici, pas d’ailleurs, Anthologie poétique de voix féminines contemporaines (Montélimar, Voix d’encre, 2012). Her poems have been translated into English and Czech.

The VERSeFest Hall of Honour recognizes established poets from the greater Ottawa-Gatineau region who have produced a substantial body of work and have made a significant contribution in building the poetry community as a leader and mentor.

OTTAWA, JUNE 4 PROSE IN THE PARK:

Ottawa’s favourite open-air literary festival and book fair, Prose in the Park, will take place on June 4, 2016, 11 am – 6 pm in the Parkdale Park. And it is absolutely free. Everyone is welcome! Prose in the Park (Prose des vents en français) is a blingual festival devoted to bringing together both established and emerging authors from across Canada. We are pleased to have some of the best authors of Montreal joining the upcoming festival, particularly Heather O’Neill, whose Daydreams of Angels should be required reading for every lover of Canadian literature. From Kingston, we will be joined by Steven Heighton, a brilliant novelist and poet, whose Every Lost Country takes readers a fantastic adventure to far-off Tibet.

From Toronto, we have Andrew Pyper, the Stephen King of Canada, and Ian Hamilton, whose Ava Lee crime series are a wonderful bridge between Canada and contemporary Asia. From Vancouver, Dietrich Kalteis is coming. His fast-paced noir crime set in the West Coast is some of the most enjoyable crime fiction on the market today. To celebrate Canadian writers of Caribbean heritage, we offer a remarkable panel, including 2015 Giller prize judge Cecil Foster. There are also wonderful Ottawa authors, including 2015 Governor General Award winner for YA fiction, Caroline Pignat, Canada’s premier fantasy writer Charles de Lint and celebrated literary fiction writers, Alan Cumyn and Mark Frutkin. And we are still organizing our Francophone panels, which offer a wide selection of brilliant prose en français.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO THE MEMBERS REGARDING THE 2014-16 CAA-NCR PRESIDENCY

There is an immediate need to secure a new Branch President following the recent retirement of Phyllis Bohonis from the position.

There will be an election at this September 9th meeting, in which we strongly encourage you to participate. Filling this position is of utmost importance to the ongoing operations of the Branch. (PLEASE NOTE ITEM BELOW REGARDING THE MEETING LOCATION)

To make a nomination for the position, or if you are interested in taking on responsibility for the position yourself, kindly (as soon as possible) contact Sharyn Heagle (sharyn_40@yahoo.com) Past-President of the branch.

In the interim, Dr. Qais Ghanem, currently VP of Communications, has graciously agreed to take on the position of Acting President pending the outcome of the September election.

The Writer in Residence term lasts for ten weeks, from January to April of each year. The yearly application deadline is September 1. Candidates should have a substantial publishing record, including two books or the equivalent with a recognized publisher. A generous stipend is attached to the position.
Our program has been careful to balance the writer’s public engagement with his or her own writing practice. While the primary function of a writing residency is to provide the writer with an extended period of time to concentrate on his or her own writing, the program consistently contributes to the wider audience’s appreciation and understanding of both the writer’s work and, more generally, contemporary Canadian writing.

Geographies of the Mind and Heart: A Weekend of Writing on Orcas Island
You’re welcome to come spend three days immersed in words–writing, talking, laughing–on Orcas Island in Washington State’s San Juan Islands. We’ll concentrate on generating new work, creating prompts to use on the spot and others to take home. We’ll also discuss topics of particular interest to the participants. The workshop is open to writers in all genres. Please bring writing materials, a sense of adventure, and a sense of humor.

Peggy Shumaker: As well as being the Artsmith Artist of the Year, Peggy Shumaker has been chosen as the Rasmuson Foundation’s Distinguished Artist for 2014. She is the author of seven books of poetry, most recently Toucan Nest, Poems of Costa Rica. Her lyrical memoir is Just Breathe Normally. Professor emerita from University of Alaska Fairbanks, Shumaker teaches in the Rainier Writing Workshop. She is founding editor of Boreal Books, publisher of fine art and literature from Alaska. She edits the Alaska Literary Series at University of Alaska Press. Peggy Shumaker was Alaska State Writer Laureate for 2010-2012.

ITEM 12: ARTSMITH ARTIST RESIDENCY JANUARY 4 – 11 2015

Each year Artsmith grants up to five Artist Residency Fellowships for artists, scholars, and writers to have one week of focused time to create new works. The 2015 residency takes place January 4-11 on Orcas Island in Washington State’s San Juan Islands. Fellows stay in individual rooms with private baths as guests of Artsmith and Kangaroo House Bed and Breakfast, and have access to the inn’s amenities, including wireless Internet and garden hot tub. Five dinners are provided during the residency. Fellows are responsible for all other meals. Being within walking distance of the beach, library, coffee shops, restaurants, galleries, and Darvill’s Bookstore, and only a few miles from Moran State Park and Turtleback Preserve, residents have no shortage of inspirational sustenance.
Visual artists, please note that Artsmith does not have artist studios, much as we wish we did. As a result, the residency is best suited for artists who do not require use of a studio. If in doubt, please email us at info @ orcasartsmith.org to inquire.
The Selection Process
The Artsmith Peer Review Panel, comprised of artists, writers, and scholars, selects Fellows based primarily on two main criteria:
1. How well the proposed work will benefit from the residency setting
2. Do the statement of intent and work sample reflect originality and evidence of pushing the boundaries of craft
The makeup of the Peer Review Panel changes each year, but is always selected to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the residency.

April Bulmer’s seven books of poetry include The Weight of Wings (Trout Lily Press, 1997), Mustard Seeds (Leaf Press, 2005), The Goddess Psalms (Serengeti Press, 2008) and Women of the Cloth (Black Moss Press, 2013). In 1998 she was a finalist for the Pat Lowther Memorial Award. She holds Master’s degrees in creative writing, religious studies and theological studies, and her work often explores the sensual realm of women and spirituality. Born in Toronto, she now lives near Kitchener, Ontario, where she writes a column on spirituality for The Cambridge Citizen.

Helen Guri

Helen Guri is the author of Match, published by Coach House Books in 2011 and shortlisted for the Trillium Book Award for Poetry. Her poems and essays have appeared in a wide variety of journals and magazines, including The Walrus, This magazine, Lemon Hound, Hazlitt, Hobo, and Canadian Literature. Additionally, Guri has taught college and university courses, narrated audiobooks at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and edited the literary magazine Echolocation. She currently works as a freelance editor for HarperCollins, Oxford University Press, and other publishers, and assists in poetry acquisitions for Brick Books.

It’s a poetry that inhabits the same emotional space as romantic comedy. Its symptoms include, but are not limited to, laughter, delight, crying (or at the minimum, a lump in the throat), self-doubt replaced by selfless confidence, the realization of love in an unexpected person, and the overwhelming urge to want to fall in love or eat chocolate. Dr. Qais Ghanem is recently retired associate professor of medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. He is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He immigrated to Canada in 1970. His professional credentials are very impressive. It would suffice to mention that he was President of the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiologists (2003-2005) He hosts a monthly discussion circle called Dialogue for Democracy.and created a popular website, http://www.dialoguewithdiversity.com/ which builds bridges and develops dialogue among the ethnic and religious groups that form the Canadian mosaic.

Dr. Ghanem is the author of a book of verse entitled From Left to Right, and of a new novel about democracy and women’s rights entitled Final Flight From Sanaa — BAICO Publishers, Ottawa. His second novel published by iUniverse is Two Boys from Aden College. About Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC)

Inspired by the network of international literary translation centres in Europe, the Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC) is the only one of its kind in North America. The primary focus of the residency is to afford working and professional literary translators a period of uninterrupted work on a current project. Many past participants have found that the most enriching and lasting rewards of the program are the deep personal and professional connections they have made with their international colleagues.

The Banff International Literary Translation Centre is open to 15 literary translators from the Americas translating works from any country in the world, as well as to translators from all over the world who are translating works from the Americas. Each year the program strives to include translators who are at different stages of their careers, from those with only one book-length published translation to veterans who have been translating as a primary professional activity for many years. Since the inaugural program in 2003, the Centre has hosted translators from approximately 30 countries translating work involving nearly 40 languages.

Translators may request a joint residency of up to one week with the author they are translating. Most guest authors come from Canada, the United States, and Mexico, but the program is sometimes able to bring authors from farther afield. Individual work sessions with the consulting translators serving in residence, as well as with the program directors, are also available. Participants meet three times a week for roundtables and presentations, and to discuss work in progress as well as broader issues in the practice of literary translation.

Michael Lista is the author of Bloom, a 2010 Quill and Quire Book of the Year. He is the poetry editor of The Walrus magazine, and the poetry columnist for The National Post. Both his poems and essays have appeared in Poetry magazine. His second book, The Scarborough, will appear in the fall of 2014 with Vehicule Press.

Steven Artelle is a local poet and author of the long poem, Four Hundred Rabbits. His writing has appeared in Vallum, FreeFall, Ottawa Arts Review, Bywords, and ottawater, as well as upcoming works in filling Station and CV2. In 2013, an excerpt from his long poem, Four Hundred Rabbits, was published by AngelHousePress, and his “Chinatown Zodiac” poetry sequence was exhibited during Ottawa’s Chinatown Remixed festival. He has completed a manuscript of poems entitled Metropantheon.

Dr. Qais GHANEM, our invited speaker will speak about his book: T My Arab Spring
My Canada

Dr. Qais Ghanem is recently retired associate professor of
medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. He is a graduate of
the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He immigrated to Canada in 1970. His
professional credentials are very impressive. It would suffice to mention that
he was President of the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiologists
(2003-2005) He hosts a monthly discussion circle called Dialogue for
Democracy.and created a popular website, http://www.dialoguewithdiversity.com/
which builds bridges and develops dialogue among the ethnic and
religious groups that form the Canadian mosaic.

Dr. Ghanem is the author of a book of verse entitled From Left to
Right, and of a new novel about democracy and women’s rights entitled Final
Flight From Sanaa — BAICO Publishers, Ottawa. His second novel published by
iUniverse is Two Boys from Aden College. He co-authored a non-fiction book
published by Create Space My Arab Spring My Canada, which will be the topic of
his talk at the MEDG luncheon of Monday, January 20, 2014.

About Banff International
Literary Translation Centre (BILTC)

Inspired by the network of international literary translation
centres in Europe, the Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC)
is the only one of its kind in North America. The primary focus of the
residency is to afford working and professional literary translators a period
of uninterrupted work on a current project. Many past participants have found
that the most enriching and lasting rewards of the program are the deep
personal and professional connections they have made with their international
colleagues.

The Banff International Literary Translation Centre is open to 15
literary translators from the Americas translating works from any country in
the world, as well as to translators from all over the world who are
translating works from the Americas. Each year the program strives to include
translators who are at different stages of their careers, from those with only
one book-length published translation to veterans who have been translating as
a primary professional activity for many years. Since the inaugural program in
2003, the Centre has hosted translators from approximately 30 countries
translating work involving nearly 40 languages.

Translators may request a joint residency of up to one week with
the author they are translating. Most guest authors come from Canada, the
United States, and Mexico, but the program is sometimes able to bring authors
from farther afield. Individual work sessions with the consulting translators
serving in residence, as well as with the program directors, are also
available. Participants meet three times a week for roundtables and
presentations, and to discuss work in progress as well as broader issues in the
practice of literary translation.

the period 2013-14 to assist with the Homage to Sylvia Autumn Festival this

The Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton seeks short stories and
poem for its annual Forget Me Not writing contest. Writers have until April 30
to submit stories of no more than 1,800 words, or poems of no more than 72
lines, in categories for writers 16 and older, and those who are younger. All
entries, fiction or non-fiction, must begin with the words, “Remember
when.” It’s the fifth year for the contest created to raise awareness
about Alzheimer’s disease, and raise money for the local chapter of the
Alzheimer Society. Submissions by writers age 19 and older must be accompanied
by a donation of $20 or more. Judy Doan, executive director of the local
chapter, said the contest has attracted as many as 75 entries in a single year.

· The Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton is once again seeking short stories and poem for its annual Forget Me Not writing contest. Writers have until April 30 to submit stories of no more than 1,800 words, or poems of no more than 72 lines, in categories for writers 16 and older, and those who are younger. All entries, fiction or non-fiction, must begin with the words, “Remember when.” It’s the fifth year for the contest created to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease, and raise money for the local chapter of the Alzheimer Society. Submissions by writers age 19 and older must be accompanied by a donation of $20 or more. Judy Doan, executive director of the local chapter, said the contest has attracted as many as 75 entries in a single year.
