In many ways there are far more opportunities today for authors to get exposure and coverage for their book then there ever were. That being said, there is also a huge amount of competition for readers’ eyeballs. So what is an author to do?

Having worked in broadcasting (both radio and television) for over 25 years, and witnessed the explosion in social media in the last ten years, Sheryl can tell you that sometimes the simplest and most straightforward of methods work best. And more often than not, it is the ‘put-yourself-out-there’ author who gets the reviews, gets the interviews and gets people talking about their book.

But where does one start? How do you find out whom to approach? When should you start talking about your book? Sheryl hopes to help you get started on the journey and provide useful advice so you can create your own marketing plan, discover the best way to write a release and understand the best way to approach radio/television.

BIO: Sheryl Bennett-Wilson worked in broadcasting in Ottawa – both radio and television – for over 25 years. For the last number of years she has written numerous articles for local and national publications, provided press and marketing material for companies, professionals, authors, musicians and a number of charities. She has also written, directed and produced corporate videos, provided editing for non-fiction books, written and continues to write content for websites and for over twelve years was the Event Manager of an annual trade show.

Entries are now being accepted for two additional 2016 award categories:

The CAA Emerging Writer Award is for a body of work by a Canadian author under 30 deemed to show exceptional promise. Nominees need not be published. The postmark deadline for this award is April 30, 2016.

 The Canadian Authors Fred Kerner Book Award is a brand new award given exclusively to members. Any genre is eligible. The postmark deadline for this award is April 15, 2016.

Our 2016 poetry faculty within The Banff Centre’s Writing Studio  program. 2016 sees three amazing poets – Karen Solie , Lisa Robertson and Michael Dickman – work intimately with twelve participants on poetry manuscripts. Karen, associate director, poetry, is author of the Griffin Poetry Prize-winning Pigeon. Michael Dickman is the author of The End of the West, Flies and Copper Canyon. He teaches at Princeton and is a regular contributor to The New Yorker, and Lisa Robertson is the author of Magenta Soul Whip and the long poem Cinema of the Present. She is a poet, essayist and translator and her practice also straddles the visual arts.

KCFF is thrilled to present the local premiere of a documentary about a giant in Canadian arts and letters who had no small impact on Kingston, too. After all, when Al Purdy died in 2000, he left a legacy not only in the form of the poems that breathed new vigour into Canada’s staid literary scene but also the A-frame cabin on Roblin Lake where he and wife Eurithe hosted pals both famous and infamous and which now serves as a writers’ retreat. Combining interviews, archival footage and new musical performances of Purdy poems by fans like Sarah Harmer and Tanya Tagaq, this debut doc by Maclean’s critic turned filmmaker Brian D. What to claim and what’s ineligible as a tax deduction can be complicated for a writer, and following the rules is essential if we want to avoid being audited. Most important, we all want to minimize our tax burden.

This presentation will look at the various deductions a writer can legitimately make, help you implement smart tax strategies to meet your compliance obligations, and maybe offer some clues about how to keep the tax man happy.

Now in its third year, this unique writing program has already received praise across North America. A recent full-page article in the prestigious international magazine Publishers Weekly describes the King’s MFA as “the only program of its kind in Canada” and “ideal for students who are continuing their careers while completing their degrees.”

One of our recent graduates, Pauline Dakin of CBC Radio, says the program has “opened doors to the U.S. publishing industry that often seem closed.” Genevieve Cole, a graduate from Seattle, describes the King’s MFA as “very energizing.” Our first graduates are already securing literary agents and book publishing contracts.

Our low-residency program focuses on the art and craft of writing under the mentorship of award-winning writers in Canada and the United States. We also prepare graduates for the practical work of being a professional writer by introducing them to publishers and agents in New York and Toronto. The MFA is supported by an advisory team chaired by Anne Collins in Toronto. She is the award-winning publisher of the Knopf Random Publishing Group.

Your members will not have to relocate to complete this graduate degree. In fact, there are only six weeks when writers need to be in Halifax, New York, or Toronto. DATES: Monday nights for 8 weeks: Jan 11, 18, 25, Feb 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 7pm-9pm

This 8-week workshop is for those who want to make time to explore contemporary classic writers. Each workshop includes a segment of discussing poems and techniques, and exercises and round tabling of participant’s own poems. Close reads of poets Nicole Brossard, David Groulx, Alden Nowlen, Sylvia Legris, Nelson Ball and more. Towards the end of the series, resources for making chapbooks and finding markets. Comes with a chapbook on writing prompts (“Writing Sparks: 50 paths to poems for when you’re feeling damp”). Inspire your own writing and sense of poetics. Come away with new poets to love, new poems made and older poems strengthened. And optionally your own first chapbook manuscript. Spaces limited.

Pearl Pirie has for years led workshops for various organizations in and around Ottawa, ran the Tree Reading Workshop Series for 4 years, was a teacher for 12 years, and has 3 poetry collections, and over a dozen chapbooks. She has judged awards and sat on juries for poetry at local, provincial and national levels. Her second book won the Robert Kroetsch Award for Innovative poetry. A poem in her current collection, the pet radish, shrunken (BookThug, 2015) is included in The Best Canadian Poetry 2014 (Tightrope, 2014)
