ITEM 4: NORTHWORDS MUSKOKA WRITING RETREAT           NEW!

A truly unique retreat! NorthWords Muskoka Literary Festival, based in Huntsville, Ontario has recently partnered with the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies to run a five day writers’ retreat to be held in Port Sydney, Ontario from June 24 to June 28, 2013.   The retreat will combine an intensive workshop experience, led by two of Canada’s finest instructors, with unique meditation sessions.  This is a one of a kind event, suitable for both beginners and advanced writers.

  Natalee Caple: Prolific writer of poetry and fiction, author of the novel In Calamity’s Wake (forthcoming in 2013). Natalee holds a PhD in English from the University of Calgary. Her short story collection, The Heart is its Own Reason (Insomniac), was reviewed by the New York Times. Her first novel, The Plight of the Happy People in an Ordinary World (Anansi), was optioned for film, and her first book of poetry, A More Tender Ocean (Coach House), was nominated for a Gerald Lampert Award. Her second novel, Mackerel Sky (Thomas Allen), was published in Canada, and in the United States (St. Martin’s). In 2010 she published a book of poetry titled The Semi-conducting Dictionary: Our Strindberg, in 2011 she published a book of short stories titled: How I Came to Haunt My Parents. In March 2013 HarperCollins will publish her novel about Calamity Jane, In Calamity’s Wake. Caple lives in Peterborough with her husband and their twin children.

  Rob Colman: Author of two poetry collections including Little Empires, published by Quattro Books in 2012. Rob is a writer and editor based in Newmarket, Ontario. His poetry has appeared in literary magazines across Canada. His most recent collection, Little Empires, was published by Quattro Books in October 2012. ITEM 7: OIW MEETING AND SPEAKER EVENT: PERSONAL HISTORIANS AND FAMILY HISTORIES                                                    NEW!

DATE: THURSDAY MAY 30 6:30 p.m.

LOCATION: Room 156, Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington St.

 Socializing starts at 6:30 p.m. and the program gets rolling at 7 p.m. Guests are welcome and must pay a fee of $10, which is deducted from the annual membership fee should they join OIW.

One of OIW’s Past Presidents, Bill Horne, accidentally became a personal historian due to an innocent inquiry from a neighbour. Join Bill on his tale of morphing from freelance business writer to personal historian, and how he lived to tell about it. And made a few dollars as well.

If you like people, and if you like writing, you’ve got a couple legs up on this fascinating genre. Everyone has a life story to tell, and they all deserve to be captured and preserved. From a simple Word document to a “full court press” book with family pictures and genealogical charts, personal historians contribute to the vibrancy of Canada and its people.

Brooke Broadbent is an avid family historian. Working with a couple of writing groups, he wrote 34 short stories about his maternal ancestors and published them in a book. He leads workshops on writing family history and memoirs and he coaches clients who are writing family histories. He will share some techniques for making family stories memorable and engaging.

ITEM 8: OTTAWA PUBLIC LIBRARY OFFERS SPECIAL PROGRAMMING FOR NATIONAL ABORIGINAL HISTORY MONTH                         NEW!

 The Ottawa Public Library is hosting a series of five programs at multiple branches in June to celebrate National Aboriginal History Month. Programs

are free to attend.

 

·       Governor General Literary award-winning Ojibway author and artist, Leo Yerxa, will discuss his art and books at the Rockcliffe Park and Rosemount branches.

·       Chad Solomon will present the `Council of the Animals´ puppet show about friendship and unconditional love at the Carlingwood, Orléans and Vanier branches.

·       The Ottawa Inuit Children´s Centre will present Inuit storytelling, culture and music at the Alta Vista and North Gloucester branches.

·       Aboriginal Experiences will explore their connection to the “heartbeat of Mother Earth”: the drum, at the Greenboro, Greely, Main, Rideau and Stittsville branches.

·       Pinock, an Algonquin from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Nation, will explain the importance of the birch canoe and demonstrate how they´re built at the Vanier branch.

 PHIL HALL’s most recent book of poems, The Small Nouns Crying Faith, receives its Ottawa launch, June 2! Hall was the 2011 winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry in English for his book of essay-poems, Killdeer. In 2012, Killdeer also won Ontario’s Trillium Book Award, an Alcuin Design Award, and was nominated for the Griffin Poetry Prize. He has taught writing and literature at York University, Ryerson University, Seneca College, George Brown College and elsewhere. Currently, he offers a manuscript mentoring service for the Toronto New School of Writing. Hall has recently been writer-in-residence at Queens University & the University of Windsor. In fall 2013 he will be an instructor at the Banff Cenre for the Arts, in the Wired Writing Program.

 MEREDITH QUARTERMAIN is a poet of the city, often compared to George Bowering and Daphne Marlatt. Critics have called her a “spellbinding phrasemaker” whose poetry is “daring,” “cinematic in scope” and “fearlessly droll.” Her books include Vancouver Walking, winner of a BC Book Award for poetry; Recipes from the Red Planet, a BC Book Award finalist; and Nightmarker, a Vancouver Book Award finalist. Last fall she served as the Vancouver Public Library Writer in Residence, leading workshops in songwriting, and writing about places. This fall her first novel Rupert’s Land will be published.
