LiPS FINAL SLAM FOR THE SEASON Saturday June 16^th, at McMartin House, 125 Gore St. East in Perth.

Doors will open at 7 and the show begins at 7:30. Admission is $10, with all proceeds going to fund the team.

June is almost here, and so is the 8^th LiPS Finals slam, to select the team to represent Lanark County at CFSW 2018 in Guelph this fall. It will be hosted by the former Capital Slam’s Slam Master Rusty Priske, who is also a prolific and published artist and will be sharing some of his work. In keeping with the inclusive nature of S.L.a.M., these Finals will also feature performers who may choose to not be judged. They will not be eligible for the team but will be an included part of the LiPS community series end-of-season show. The event is open to all ages, however please be advised that performers’ content is not previewed or censored. The venue is accessible to those with mobility issues. Please respect those with chemical sensitivities and refrain from wearing scents, hairspray, essential oils, clothing recently cleaned with scented products or fabric softeners, and such. Please also be aware of the environment you have been in earlier, as chemicals and scents are picked up and carried in our clothes and on our bodies and can cause people to suffer unpleasant symptoms or become very ill.

TOPIC: The Examined Life: Understanding Ourselves Through Memoir

SPEAKER: Lee Ann Eckhardt Smith

Far beyond the celebrity “tell-all,” a well-written memoir offers much to both the writer and the readers. A memoir can transform the pain of the past into clarity, and also provide an insightful exploration into an aspect of life, a time of life, or a certain place in time. Lee Ann will present some options for themes and structures within this genre, as well as tips for how writers can use specific techniques to keep the reader reading.

Bio: Lee Ann Eckhardt Smith’s workshop series for writers of family history and memoir, “Write It So They’ll Read It” has been running in Ottawa, Perth, and other locations across Ontario since 2007. BIO: JC Sulzenko writes in a number of genres and creates poetry and stories for young and adult readers alike. The Ottawa International Writers Festival and the Ottawa Public Library/Ottawa Children’s Literature Round Table’s Kid Galas have showcased her poetry and her books for children. Her poems appear in a number of chapbooks and anthologies and have been broadcast on radio and television. To assist in fund-raising for charitable organizations, JC writes impromptu poetry at special events and offers some of her books for sale through not-for-profit groups.

There are, simply stated, two kinds of narrative at work in a novel: scene and summary. It is in scene-work that the reader is closest to the action. The camera can dolly in tight on the characters, close enough to pick up every word and grumble, every shudder and wink. That’s where we come to really know the characters by what they do and, in dialogue, by what they say. But when we use the term dialogue, we can’t really divorce it from the “connective tissue” of a scene. Because we need to see the scene not simply hear it. This is how we account for the time in which a scene takes place. And that is the most important difference between scene and summary: a scene takes place in real time – time the writer must account for.

In this workshop, we will look at what makes a scene tick. And at the heart of that is dialogue. Dialogue’s chief job is to reveal character.

CAA WRITING CIRCLES (WCs) have started for the 2015-16 season

The Circle at McNabb Community Center (Percy Street just north of Gladstone) will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, October 13^th at 6:00 in the meeting room, and we have space for a couple of new members.

This is an opportunity to receive feedback from a knowledgeable group of writers; many participants have published the very material critiqued in their circle

With the Internet and proliferation of blogs and online publications, everyone’s a writer these days. How do you set yourself apart when it comes to your brand and your audience? What should you be doing on social media to engage your audience and market your work?

BIO: Laurel is a freelance writer and Social Media and Communications Strategist. When not working on her collection of Shorts (really short stories) she provides digital marketing and communications consulting services to individuals, companies, brands and other organizations that need help telling their story.
As a writer, Laurel has covered everything from daily news stories, people profiles, entertainment, lifestyle, gossip, fashion, trends, movie reviews and more for both print and online publications. She has been known to tackle both serious issues and lighthearted topics during her column run with a local newspaper. Her years of entertainment work allowed her to experience both sides of the industry while working on and writing about shows like Canadian Idol, So You Think You Can Dance and Canada’s Walk of Fame.

Self-Publishing via Kobo Writing Life – Mark Lebefvre, Director, Kobo 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Have you heard all the hype about self-publishing? Interested in checking it out but not sure where to start or whether it’ll be worth it? In a two hour session, Kobo’s Director of Self-Publishing & Author Relations will describe the current state of the publishing industry, including the many different options available for authors. In the first hour, he’ll summarize various traditional publishing options and describe what types of author projects might be best geared towards indie publishing. In the second hour, Mark will offer advanced tips and advice for authors who are already self-publishing and are looking to increase their sales across multiple sales channels. He’ll also provide specific strategies that will help authors maximize their global sales via Kobo.

Join local author and social media enthusiast Linda Poitevin for a look at how to maximize your online presence the right way – and pick up some new social media marketing tips along the way.

2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. As an author who has self-published multiple books, Linda Poitevin knows firsthand how expensive self-publishing can be—and how tempting it can be to skip certain steps in taking your book to market. She also knows all the reasons why a professional edit should never be one of those skipped steps. Drawing on experience and observation, Linda will share with you why the all-important edit is so important, and offer suggestions on where to look for an editor that will fit with your needs and your budget.

Do you need an editor for your self-published book? In this panel session local editor Stacey D. Atkinson will discuss the four types of editing, costs, time frames, and resources available to you.
